The Director plans, manages, and reports on all activities associated with the daily operations and coordination of the Engineering Department. The Director will formulate and initiate strategies to improve Engineering Department responsiveness and accountability to accredited customers and the public, while systematically evaluating department performance, surveyor variability, and standards of effectiveness. The Director provides direction and leadership to surveyors addressing interpretation of standards and survey processes and participates as a consultant in the development and revision of standards and survey process in support of ongoing accreditation services and special projects. The Director serves as faculty for surveyor and field education programs and represents the Joint Commission at speaking engagements and in media interviews. The ideal candidate will provide leadership and oversight to educational needs identified and offerings provided to the division through in-services, classes, conference calls, newsletters, and annual training conferences.
The Director will provide leadership and direction to the Healthcare Environment: Technical Advisory Council (HE:TAC) focused on Life Safety, Environment of Care, and Emergency Management. The Director will solicit input and membership from both the Joint Commission enterprise and leaders in the healthcare community while creating a process to disseminate information internally to the Joint Commission and externally as appropriate to the healthcare community.
The Director will provide updates and recommendations to Joint Commission leadership regarding emerging trends that impact the healthcare environment while participating in meetings and forums with federal agencies, national code promulgation associations, and other agencies in coordination with the Washington, DC Office. The Director has 5 direct reports and hundreds of internal customers in the Oakbrook Terrace and Washington DC offices. The Director of Engineering role is a local role, based in and working daily in the Oakbrook Terrace office.
A Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Electrical, or Bio-medical Engineering, is necessary. A Master’s Degree in management, engineering, or related field is required. A minimum of 10-15 years of healthcare experience, with at least five years spent at a director level or higher, is necessary. Knowledge of the Joint Commission policies, standards, survey, and accreditation processes is needed, as well as first-hand experience participating in and managing multiple Joint Commission surveys in an acute care environment. The select candidate will maintain, or be eligible to maintain, at least three of the following certifications: Certified Healthcare Facility Manager (CHFM); Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS); Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP); Certified Energy Manager (CEM); National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) membership.
